Welcome and thank you for stopping by “That’s Swell!”: A Reel Swell Productions Blog. My name is Julie. I’m a writer and reader. I started “That’s Swell!” in May 2010. I really don’t remember why I wanted to start a book blog. *Slaps forehead* Oh, yeah, I remember now…I like to read! However, I didn’t start off to write a book review blog, I just wanted to have a blog. As I began planning my blog, I wondered what should I write about and who would be out there to read what I wrote about?
I’ve always enjoyed reading in my spare time. So why not put this hobby of mine to good use! There you have it then…”That’s Swell!” was born and has been on a roll since.
Why a variety of books, you ask? I’ve always been a mood reader. The kind of person that asks: “What am I in the mood to read today?” I’ve also gone through various cycles in my reading. Mysteries, Historicals, Romances and even Non-Fiction have cluttered my bookshelves.
A few years back, I became a huge fan of the Harry Potter books. In search of something to read that was similar, I moved to reading a variety of children’s books. Then came Twilight and everything changed for me as a reader. Since then, I’ve primarily stuck with reading young adult fiction, but in recent months I’ve moved on to literary fiction and urban fantasy. However, I’m going back to featuring YA for “That’s Swell!”
I love all kinds of YA stories, characters and worlds — fantasy, paranormal, mystery, romance, contemporary, historical settings, dystopian, heck…even zombies! Yes, I still love vampires.
Some of my favorite YA books include: Something Strange and Deadly, The Hunger Games, The Iron King, Nevermore, Shadow Hills, the Private series, Beautiful Creatures, The Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Eternal Ones, Across the Universe, Divergent, Burn for Burn, Rift, and anything by Ellen Hopkins.
Some of my favorite Adult books include: Rebecca, The Sandalwood Tree, The Historian and Aftertime.
I’m constantly adding to my list of fave books. If you would like to learn more about my review policies, please visit that particular page for more info!
I’m also a book blogger on The Huffington Post, a freelance children’s book reviewer for Common Sense Media and a freelance Art & Culture contributor to North Valley Magazine. I’m a member of the National Book Critics Circle. If you would like to contact me, please send an email to info@reelswellproductions.com!
Aside from book reviewing, I am a freelance writer. I have my own professional freelance company called Reel Swell Productions. So, why is it reel instead of real? Because I’m an aspiring screenwriter and I love movies and television!
I am, currently, a full-time writer working on several screenplays, a YA historical mystery novel, and a Middle Grade fantasy. Before I became a full-time writer, I worked for 11 years in law enforcement.
In my free time — when not reading the mountains of tbr piles in my office and writing — I love to draw cartoons, exercise and do yoga (although, I don’t do this as far often as I should) and watch TV. Other than from the shows mentioned below…I watch The Vampire Diaries, Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey, Hawaii Five-O, Homeland, The Killing, The Good Wife, and White Collar. I even love Ghost Adventures!
What’s my fave show of all time? Sex and the City!
I live in Arizona, however, I’d prefer to live in California. My goal is to be a screenwriter pounding the pavements of L.A. trying to sell my gritty, period piece dramas while working as a staff writer on Mad Men or The Vampire Diaries, or executive producing my own TV show. I am a dreamer, writer, reader and reviewer, but not necessarily in that order. I have lot of confidence in myself and know one day I will fulfill my dreams. It’s Hollywood or bust, baby!
Happy Reading,
Julie
