One Language is Never Enough – 1

One Language is Never Enough - Julie Carlson

안녕하세요! (Hello! — an-nyeong-ha-se-yo)

I decided to name this post — “One Language is Never Enough.”

한 가지 어는 충분하지 못해

 (han ka-ji eo-neun chung-bun-haji mot hae)

I believe this phrase is so true! If you have the desire to learn another language…go for it!

Learning any language through self-study is extremely hard. I have absolutely no one to talk to in Korean. So, how do I know if I’m saying words or writing sentences correctly? As with anything…it’s trial and error.

When writing Korean, you never Romanize. The Romanization above is to sound out the words. I picked up the alphabet extremely fast! I’m learning how to write and read in Hangul (Han-geul, Korean alphabet). It’s the grammar that’s tough — same problem I had with Spanish…conjugating! And of course…there’s honorifics (respectful way of talking to people based on seniority and familiarity), irregular verbs and particles (we don’t have these in English). I’m learning more verbs through a site called Memrise.

Here’s one of my Korean Notebooks:

Julie - Korean Notebook

Memrise has methods like this: ex. 결정하다 (to decide) The girl (결) could not DECIDE if she liked Jeong (정) so she hit the club. ㅋㅋㅋ (lol) The bold words are how you pronounce the Korean word. (하다 – ha-da) means “do.”

Plus. everything is said backwards. A verb or an adjective is always on the end of a sentence. Ex. I study Korean — would be: I Korean study.

Funny Story: I love Big Bang’s song “Blue.” I have a lot of K-pop songs on my iPod. The music helps me with listening skills, plus they’re catchy! The other night in my dream, I heard “Blue”…in Korean. Hearing music in your dreams is rare! Hmmm..maybe my subconscious is telling me something.

Another thing I’ve discovered about Korea — the awesome beauty products! America is starting to get them — like BB (Blemish Balm) cream. Great stuff! I love how it evens out my skin tone. Two of my favorite products (I purchased) are from Etude House — White Moistfull Cream and White Moistfull Spot Treatment. The spot treatment is pure magic. Pimples are dramatically reduced or gone the next day. The products are somewhat expensive, but worth the price.

I just purchased:

TonyMoly “EggPore Shiny Skin Soap” (to treat pores and blackheads – cute carton), Top Shop “Face It” Oil Cut Pore Powder Pact (the case has a sweet plastic cover inside to protect the powder), and The Face Shop “Face It” Oil Cut Pore Balm (a primer). My purchase even came with samples!!

*The Face Shop “Face It” Primer, The Face Shop “Face It” BB Cream, The Face Shop “WaterProof” BB Cream, TonyMoly “Intense Dual Effect Sleeping Pact” (Skin Whitening & Anti Wrinkle), TonyMoly “Red Appletox Honey Cream” (to firm skin), and some kind of Collagen Mask from The Face Shop.*

Can’t wait to use and try all!

Just in case you are wondering…here’s what I’m reading:

Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carringer and Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

I purchased Shades of Earth by Beth Revis and a Korean-English dictionary.

**The Rilakkuma stickers on my keyboard are Hangeul letters!**

Music I’m listening to: Ri Ji-hoon’s “Punishment” – Check out his gorgeous voice and sexy signature “belt dance.”

Wow yeah, I bet it really is tough learning another language on your own. But it sounds like you’re really integrating yourself into the culture… enough to hear it in your dreams!! Heh, that’s crazy! I hope you liked Etiquette & Espionage btw – I LOVED it!
