The {Teen} Book Scene: Character Interview with Sunny of Blood Ties + Giveaway!

I have to admit…I have not read the Blood Coven series by Mari Mancusi. Of course, for the The Teen Book Scene tour I ended up reading the final book, BLOOD TIES. It’s hilarious, quirky and fun! I love Sunny’s voice. She rocks! I’m looking forward to going back to the beginning and reading the other five books.

If you’ve read the Blood Coven series, feel free to click on “Show” to reveal the spoiler synopsis. If you haven’t…then you might want to wait! But you can still enjoy the interview :)
The final battle is brewing between Vampires and Slayers. But for Sunny McDonald, the true war is being fought over her heart.

Though now officially back in the arms of her vampire boyfriend Magnus, Sunny finds she still can’t forget the gentle mortal Jayden who once saved her life. And when the darkness threatens to steal his humanity, Sunny finds herself with a choice. Stay true to Magnus and the Blood Coven or defy them in a desperate attempt to save Jayden’s soul

Meanwhile, the Blood Coven is gearing up for its toughest fight yet–going head to head with a splinter group of Slayer Inc who’s regrouping in Tokyo, Japan, still determined to take over the world. In dark blood bars and hidden temples, it’ll be Vampires vs. Slayers in a showdown that could cost Sunny not only her heart…but also her very life.
Mari Mancusi used to wish she could become a vampire back in high school. But she ended up in another blood sucking profession –journalism — instead. Today she works as a freelance TV producer and author of books for teens and adults.

When not writing about creatures of the night, Mari enjoys traveling, cooking, goth clubbing, watching cheesy horror movies, and her favorite guilty pleasure–videogames. A graduate of Boston University and a two time Emmy Award winner, she lives in Austin , Texas with her husband Jacob and their dogs Mesquite and Bowie.

So Sunny tell me…

1. How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

I don’t really want to talk about age, if you don’t mind. It’s a sensitive subject with me. And it would be for you, too, if your boyfriend were a thousand year old immortal who looks like he’s seventeen. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like when I start looking older than him. People will start thinking I’m a cougar, then his mother, then his grandmother. Ugh. If only there were a way to stop the aging clock. I mean, I’m not asking for immortal life here–I don’t mind only going around the planet 80 or 90 years…I just don’t want to look like I have!

2. Do you push the elevator button more than once? Do you really believe it makes the elevator go faster?

No, that’s just silly. And something my sister Rayne would probably do. She’s the impatient one. I’m willing to wait for what I want.

3. Do you feel like you’ve lived this day a hundred times before?

Wow – these are very psychological questions, huh? In any case, for me every day seems pretty different. I mean, in one year I was bitten by a vampire, drank from the Holy Grail, saved the Coven from an evil vampire bent on its destruction, found out I was really a fairy princess, been kidnapped by said fairies and almost forced to marry one against my will, and now I’m trying to stop an international paranormal war that threatens the very existence of humanity, all while trying to help my best friend regain his mortality. So um, no, I’d say this day–like every day in my life–is pretty darn unique. And I hope I never have to live it again.

4. If you knew that everyone you know was going to die tomorrow. Who would you visit today?

Ugh. That’s a horrible thought. I guess I’d visit my family. My sister Rayne. My Mom. My stepmom Heather and my half-sister Stormy. Of course they’re all spread out, so it’d be a long day trying to meet up with them all! But it’d be worth it; my family means everything to me. And, of course, I’d want to end the day with Magnus, my vampire boyfriend. Spend those last minutes crushed in his embrace. After all, there are worse ways to go…

5. Is it possible to know without a doubt, what is good and what is evil?

I used to think so. But now it’s become so gray. I mean vampires are supposed to be the bad guys, right? Chomping on human necks and all that? And Slayers are supposed to be the good guys–saving humanity from creatures of the night. So how come sometimes just the opposite is true? I know vampires who would give up their immortal lives to save a human girl and Slayers with a lust for power ready to destroy mankind.

Bonus: When was the last time you marched into the dark with only the soft glow of an idea you strongly believed in?

While my glow may not be as bright as Rayne’s (who always speaks her mind, if she’s not screaming it!) I do stand up for what I believe. Like with Jayden. When they found out he was turning into a sickly vampire, half of them wanted to just put him down like a dog–out of his misery, they said. But I knew that if there was even a tiny chance to save his humanity, I had to go for it–no matter how unpopular that made me with the other vamps, not to mention my boyfriend.

Thanks, Sunny!
